What Turkey Calls Do You Use???

Turkey Hunter

I want to know what types of turkey calls that other people use. I know what I use and I know that they work. I also know that there are A LOT of turkey calls out on the market, and I am sure that some work better than others.

The calls that I use are a H.S. Strut Owl Hoot and a H.S. Strut box call for locating turkeys. When I am sitting Mouth Callsin my blind during the hunt, I use a Hunter’s Specialties Diaphragm mouth call and a very old school slate call with a plastic striker. If it is windy or raining when I am hunting, I also use my box call to get the sound louder than mother nature. From time to time I will also use a double push button yelper. It has a tendencyPush Button Yelper to bring in a tom that is with a group of hens. I really do not like the push button calls that mount to your gun barrel. I personally do not think that they sound very good.

So that is about it as far as what turkey calls I use. What do you use??? Share with us all.

Happy Hunting.

It’s Turkey Hunting Time

Struting TurkeysWell everyone, it is that time of the year and now Spring turkey season is upon us. Time to get up at 4:00a.m., time to put on the camo, get the gun ready, and get out there and do what it is that we do best…HUNT! A lot of people think that we are crazy for wanting to get up so early just to go out and sit in the middle of nowhere, not even knowing if we are going to get anything.

To me, turkey hunting is so much more than that. It is a time to get outside when no one else is there and just appreciate nature. It is so much fun to get out in nature before the birds start chirping, to watch the sun rise, to get out and listen to what nature sounds like, to see how nature starts off its morning, and to just be hunting.

Let’s talk about turkey hunting do’s and dont’s…

First turkey hunting do’s. Obviously SAFETY, SAFETY, SAFETY!!! Safety is the most important aspect of hunting no matter what you are hunting for. The night before you go hunting, it is a good idea to locate turkeys. This is generally done at dusk. The reason behind it is, when you locate turkeys the night before you go hunting, they are going to be in that same spot in the morning, the time that really counts. You can locate turkeys a couple of different ways. One way is to use your “locator” calls. Owl hoot, box call, or mouth calls. Slate calls work sometimes, but generally they are more of an early morning call and turkeys generally do not respond to them in the evening. I would recommend using the Owl hoot. It has worked the best for me in my 18 years of hunting. You want to use it in this way “short short, short short (little pause) short short, short long”. It might make more sense if you think of this sentence when using the Owl hoot, “You cook for me, I cook for youuuuuuu”.

It is also very important to get out to your spot EARLY. When I say early, I mean early. You need to get out there before the birds start to chirp. If you get out there when they are, you are already behind and you need to hurry to your spot. The reason behind this is that when the birds start to chirp that means that soon the turkeys will be getting down out of their roost. You want to be in your spot while the turkeys are still in roost. When going to your spot, you need to move very slowly and methodically. Turkeys have FANTASTIC vision and GOOD hearing. You almost need to sneek to your spot. If you get busted getting to your spot, good luck trying to get the turkeys back; it most likely won’t happen.

When calling turkeys, you do not want to call too much, or you will scare them away. Generally, you should call for 1 or 2 30 second increments every 10-15 minutes.

Ok, now for some turkey hunting dont’s. Do not wear clothing that is colored red, white, or blue. These are the bright colors of a turkey and you may be mistaken for a turkey by another hunter. Do not call for turkeys and walk through the timber at the same time. This may confuse other hunters as well and they may mistake you for a turkey that is coming in.

That’s it for now. I wish everyone the best of luck turkey hunting this season.
