Fishing Tips For Bass/Bluegill/Crappie

To me, fishing in a farm pond is one of the funnest places to fish and one of the funnest ways to fish. I grew up on a family farm that has been in our family name for over 140 years. Within the 160 acre farm, we have a pond. It is a place where not only I have many memories, but my entire family has memories at that pond. What does the pond have for fish? There are largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, catfish, grass carp, and there used to be a billion and one bullheads in it, but no longer. That farm pond is the one place where I know that I can go fishing and I know before I even get there that I am going to be successful and catch fish. How do I do that??? I shall share…

When fishing in a farm pond for bass, I can give you one bait that I know is guaranteed to work for you, and that is a live frog. Largemouth bass like live frogs about as much as Harry Carey liked the Cubs. They are in my mind the best bait to catch a largemouth bass on. There are other tackle that will work. I also love to use a top-water bait. I jig it and real it is real slow. They work especially great in shallow areas, or areas that have thick cover under the water.

When fishing for bluegill or crappie, I generally use a small jig with either a wax worm on the hook or a chunk of a normal worm. When using a normal worm on a hook for small fish, make sure that you do not use too big of a piece, or else the fish won’t be able to get the worm and hook in its mouth and will probably be intimidated and leave it alone. Also using a very small jig setup with a spoon on it works especially well for crappie. They are a little bit bigger fish than the bluegill and have a larger mouth, so they won’t be quite as intimidated at something larger. Also when fishing for bluegill or crappie, use an ultra-lite rod and reel. That will make your experience WAY fun.

When fishing for catfish, I have two words for you and two words only….STINK BAIT!!!! I will promise you that if you use a plastic worm and stink bait, specifically blood stink bait, I know that you will be successful at fishing for catfish. Some form of stink bait is the only thing that I use when fishing for catfish, simply because it has never failed me.

I know that if you follow some of the above tips, that you will be successful.

Did I miss something??? Let us know by commenting and sharing also what works for you. Myself and the readers of this blog would definitely enjoy to hear from you.

  3. I use cut bait for catfish and have had real good success. Largemouth, I use soft plastics – in a watermelon seed color usually – but I agree with the live frog idea, too! Crappie are so plentiful in our nearby lakes, that you can throw a bare hook at them and they’ll bite! So, I have nothing to add to that one!
